Socket Installation & Additions

Professional advice, careful workmanship and straightforward communication for homeowners planning electrical improvements or repairs.

Running out of plug sockets is one of the most common problems in modern homes. Whether you need extra sockets in the kitchen, a dedicated socket in a home office, or a weatherproof outdoor socket for the garden or driveway, SM Grant Electrician provides safe, professional socket installation across Dunoon.

All work is carried out to BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations) and certified on completion.

Why You Should Never Rely on Extension Leads

Overloaded extension leads and daisy-chained multi-socket adaptors are a leading cause of electrical fires in UK homes. If you find yourself constantly using extension leads, the safest and most practical solution is to have additional sockets professionally installed — permanently wired into your electrical system with no trailing cables or overloading risk.

Additional & Replacement Sockets

We install and replace all types of domestic sockets, including:

  1. Single and double switched sockets
  2. USB sockets and USB-C combined socket outlets
  3. Fused connection units (FCUs)
  4. Shaver sockets for bathrooms
  5. Flush or surface-mounted sockets
  6. High-specification sockets (stainless steel, chrome, brushed brass)
  7. Additional sockets on existing ring main circuits
  8. New dedicated circuits where required

Home Office & Kitchen Sockets

Modern living demands more power points than most older homes were designed to provide. We regularly install additional sockets for:

  1. Home offices and study areas
  2. Kitchen worktop appliance sockets
  3. Behind televisions and media units
  4. Understairs storage areas
  5. Utility rooms and garages
  6. Bedrooms and home gym spaces

We will advise on the best solution — whether adding to an existing ring circuit or running a new spur — to ensure your installation is safe, tidy and up to regulation.

Outdoor Sockets

An outdoor socket opens up a huge range of possibilities for your garden, driveway and outbuildings. From powering garden tools and lighting to running a hot tub or outdoor kitchen, a properly installed external socket is a practical and popular addition to any home.

We install:

  1. Weatherproof IP-rated outdoor sockets
  2. Single and double outdoor socket outlets
  3. Sockets on external walls, fences and outbuilding walls
  4. Sockets in garages, sheds and summer houses
  5. Dedicated circuits for hot tubs and garden rooms
  6. RCD-protected outdoor circuits for full safety compliance

All outdoor socket installations use IP-rated weatherproof enclosures suitable for external use, and are protected by an RCD as required under current wiring regulations to guard against electric shock risk.

Important: Outdoor Electrical Safety

Any socket installed outdoors must be:

  1. Rated to at least IP44 (splash-proof) for general outdoor use
  2. Protected by a 30mA RCD
  3. Wired using cable suitable for outdoor or underground installation where required

Attempting to install outdoor sockets without the correct knowledge and certification is dangerous and may invalidate your home insurance. Always use a qualified electrician.

What Happens After Installation?

Once your new socket or circuit is installed, we carry out full testing using calibrated electrical testing equipment. For any work that requires notification, we provide the correct certification and handle the Building Control notification process on your behalf.

Fully Certified & Compliant

All socket installation work is:

  1. Compliant with BS 7671:2018 Wiring Regulations
  2. Certified with a Minor Works Certificate or Electrical Installation Certificate as appropriate
  3. Covered by our public liability insurance
