Full & Partial House Rewiring

Professional advice, careful workmanship and straightforward communication for homeowners planning electrical improvements or repairs.

A full or partial rewire is one of the most significant electrical investments you can make in your home — and one of the most important for safety. Older wiring systems deteriorate over time and can become a serious fire and shock hazard. SM Grant Electrician provides professional rewiring services for domestic properties across Dunoon, carried out to the highest standard and fully certified on completion.

What Is a House Rewire?

A house rewire involves replacing the existing electrical wiring throughout your property with new cables that meet current UK wiring regulations (BS 7671:2018). This includes all fixed wiring for lighting circuits, ring main socket circuits, cooker circuits, and any other dedicated circuits throughout the property.

A full rewire is typically followed by the installation of a new modern consumer unit to replace the old fuse board.

Signs Your Home May Need Rewiring

  1. The property was built or last rewired more than 25–30 years ago
  2. Wiring is rubber or fabric insulated (common in pre-1970s homes)
  3. Your Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) has recommended rewiring
  4. Persistent tripping, flickering lights or unexplained power loss
  5. Scorch marks or burning smells around sockets and switches
  6. Old round-pin sockets or brown/black bakelite fittings
  7. You are planning a major renovation or extension
  8. The current wiring has no earth bonding or RCD protection

Full House Rewire

A full rewire replaces all the fixed wiring in your home from scratch. This is the recommended option for older properties where the existing wiring is beyond its serviceable life or where a complete renovation is being undertaken.

What is included in a full rewire:

  1. Removal of all existing wiring
  2. Installation of new twin and earth cables throughout the property
  3. New consumer unit installed as standard
  4. New sockets, switches and light fittings (or existing retained where suitable)
  5. Full circuit testing and inspection on completion
  6. Electrical Installation Certificate issued

Partial Rewire

A partial rewire replaces only specific circuits or areas of the property where wiring has deteriorated, been damaged, or fails to meet current standards. This is a cost-effective solution when only a portion of the installation requires attention.

Common reasons for a partial rewire include:

  1. A new kitchen or bathroom installation
  2. Loft or garage conversion
  3. An extension requiring new circuits
  4. Specific circuits condemned on an EICR
  5. Replacing old aluminium wiring in part of the property
