Loft Conversion Electrician

Professional advice, careful workmanship and straightforward communication for homeowners planning electrical improvements or repairs.

A loft conversion is one of the most effective ways to add living space and value to your home. Getting the electrics planned and installed correctly from the start is essential to ensuring the new space is safe, functional and fully compliant. SM Grant Electrician provides complete electrical installation services for loft conversions across Dunoon, working alongside your builder or contractor to deliver a seamless result.

All work is carried out to BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations).

Why Loft Conversion Electrics Must Be Planned Early

Electrical work for a loft conversion should be planned at the design stage, before any structural work begins. Deciding on socket positions, lighting layouts, heating requirements and any dedicated circuits early on ensures cables can be run cleanly through the structure during the build — avoiding the need for costly surface-mounted trunking or making good after decoration.

We offer a free pre-build survey and can liaise directly with your architect, project manager or building contractor.

Consumer Unit Upgrade

Most loft conversions require additional circuits to be added to the consumer unit (fuse board). If your existing consumer unit is old or already at capacity, a new consumer unit will need to be installed before the additional circuits can be connected. We will assess this during your initial survey and advise you accordingly, with no hidden costs.

Smoke Alarms in Loft Conversions

Building Regulations require that interlinked smoke alarms are installed in loft conversions as part of the works. In Scotland, all homes are already legally required to have interlinked alarms throughout the property. We ensure your new loft space is fully covered and that any new alarms are correctly interlinked with the existing alarm system in your home.

Bathroom & En-Suite Electrics

Many loft conversions include a bathroom or en-suite. Bathroom electrical work must comply with the zoning requirements set out in BS 7671 — specifying which types of fitting and equipment can be used in each zone relative to the bath or shower. We ensure all bathroom electrics are correctly installed with the appropriate IP-rated fittings and RCD protection.

First Fix & Second Fix

First Fix

During the first fix, all cables are run to their intended positions before plastering and boarding takes place. This includes all lighting drops, socket feeds, heating circuits and any other dedicated circuits. Work at this stage is co-ordinated with the builder to ensure cables are correctly positioned and protected.

Second Fix

The second fix takes place once the room is plastered and decorated. All sockets, switches, light fittings and appliances are connected and the installation is fully tested before the Electrical Installation Certificate is issued.
